The Rocksburg novels rival the quality of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin sea novels, and Brushback is one of Constantine's best works. It is a pity that Constantine's novels don't currently share the same popularity. I've read most of Constantine's novels and I haven't /5(2). Brush Back is the 17th book in the VI Warshawski series written by Sara Paretsky. The book was published in and focuses on a Chicago-based female private-eye in the 90s. The series began in the 80s (if I remember properly) and covers all the cases VI handles. In most of them, she's beaten to a bloody pulp and almost dies/5. "Brushback" is a very strong 4 star book. I would have given it stars if that were possible (come on Amazon, give us that half star option!). I didn't consider this to be a mystery novel, instead I would put it in the category of action novel/5(19). Brush Back. Read an excerpt from Brush Back. Brushback is a crime novel by the American writer K. C. Constantine set in s Rocksburg, a fictional, blue-collar, Rustbelt town in Western Pennsylvania (modeled on the author's hometown of McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, adjacent to Pittsburgh).Author: K. C. Constantine. This book is the start of a new mystery series involving the main character, Private Investigator Evan Austin. In the opening story, the characters are engaging and story is interesting enough to catch my attention and leave me wanting more/5. V.I. Warshawski (Critical Mass, , etc.) takes on the most thankless task of her career: reopening a year-old murder case on behalf of a convicted defendant who hates the sight of trucker Frank Guzzo, who was once V.I.’s high school boyfriend, tells her that his mother, Stella, claims she was framed now that she’s been released after doing a quarter-century for beating Frank.
